Rotary Club Radio was privileged to have the opportunity to interview the Rotary Group Study Exchange Team (GSE Team) from the Czech Republic and Slovakia on April 10, 2013 in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin.

The GSE program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for businesspeople and professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers.

As a GSE team member, each participant travels with their team to areas of different countries. Teams will enjoy a four to six week experience of the host country’s culture and institutions, observing how their vocations are practiced abroad, developing personal and professional relationships, and exchanging ideas.

During their 4-6 week tour, participants will experience five full days of vocational visits, 15 to 20 club presentations, 10 to 15 formal visits and social events, two to three days at the district conference, three to four hours per day of cultural and site tours, and three to four hours per day of free time with host families.

Each team member’s travel expenses are paid for through the Foundation, via the most economical round-trip airline ticket between the home and host countries. Hosting Rotarians provide meals, lodging, and group travel within their district.

District 5960 is excited to host the 2013 Inbound GSE Team from District 2240 – Czech Republic and Slovakia. I look forward to interviewing the group and hearing more about their experiences in America, what they’ve seen and what is yet to come.

Global Peace Forum Derry~Londonderry Coming at the Right Time

The Rotary Club of Londonderry in partnership with the University of Ulster’s International Conflict Research Institute (INCORE), will host a Global Peace Forum from 24^th – 26^th May 2013. The Forum is part of Rotary’s year of Peace through Service. The aim of the Derry~Londonderry Forum is to contribute to Reconciliation, Learning and Full Self Expression for those involved in peacemaking and peacebuilding throughout the world.

Derry or Londonderry – one place with two names – has an intriguing story and a special place in the history of Ireland, Britain and the world. From Colmcille through the siege of Derry and the plantation of Ulster to World War II; from the Civil Rights Marches through Bloody Sunday to the emerging Peace Process and the cessation of violence – Derry is the place where these significant episodes were thought about, fought about and worked through, shaping the histories of Ireland, Britain, America and the rest of the world.

2013 is a landmark year for the Derry~Londonderry, the Rotary Club of Londonderry, Peace studies at the local University and the Northern Irish peace process. It is:

The 15^th anniversary of the Belfast or Good Friday Agreement;
The year that Derry will celebrate its designation as the UK’s first ever City of Culture;
The 400^th anniversary of the granting of the city’s charter and the name Londonderry;
The 90^th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Londonderry; and
The 20th anniversary of the founding of INCORE, the University of Ulster’s centre of excellence in peace studies; and

President of the Club, Gavin Killeen says ‘We have designed a stimulating programme, which will provide delegates with the opportunity to engage with local and international peacemakers, political, community and business leaders, in the context of the ongoing culturally-led regeneration underway in this historic city’.

Sessions on the Northern Irish peace process will offer delegates a unique opportunity to witness peacebuilding as it unfolds, with participation from many of those who have made, and continue to make peace in Northern Ireland a reality.

Speakers confirmed include Rotary International world president Sakuji Tanaka, Roelf Mayer (Chief Negotiator for the South African National Party), Juan Jose Ibarretxe (former Basque President); ChouChou Namagabe (Gender Activist in Congo) and John Cullinane (US Entrepreneur involved in the Northern Irish Peace Process). These speakers will be joined by political, business and community leaders from Ireland, North and South.

President Killeen adds ‘Although much has been achieved in making peace in Northern Ireland, there are still sensitive issues to deal with so we can embed the peace and build social cohesion here. This Forum provides Rotarians with a chance to observe Northern Ireland’s journey from conflict, through reconciliation to peace, in the context of other International Peace Initiatives’.

The Trust Edge delivers a comprehensive plan to successfully implement the building of trust in an organization or relationship. His 8 Pillars of Trust are a break through for success in the board room, office, marriage, or friendship. Trust is a key component of life.

The 8 Pillars of Trust

Consistency: The little things done consistently make for leaders being followed, increased sales and retention, and a higher level of trust. Consistency is the way brands are built and character is revealed.
Clarity: People trust the clear and mistrust or distrust the ambiguous. Be clear about your mission, purpose, expectations, and daily activities. When people are clear about the mission they do the little things differently. A clear mission unifies and inspires. When we are clear about priorities on a daily basis we become productive and effective.
Compassion: Think beyond yourself. Never underestimate the power of sincerely caring. It is the reason we trust our mothers over some salespeople. We are skeptical if the salesperson really has our best interest in mind. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is not just an old saying; it is a bottom-line truth. If followed, it builds trust.
Character: Do what is right over what is easy. Character is a mix of two things. One is integrity, which means being the same from beliefs to words to actions. The other is moral character. Take the high road in every interaction.
Contribution: Few things build trust quicker than actual results. Be a contributor who delivers real results.
Competency: Staying fresh, relevant and capable builds trust. The humble teachable person keeps learning new and better ways of doing things. They stay current on ideas and trends. There is always more to learn so make a habit of reading, learning, and listening to fresh information.
Connection: People want to follow, buy from, and be around friends. People become friends when they build connections. Ask questions. Listen. Life, work,and trust are about relationships. All relationships are best built by establishing genuine connection.
Commitment: Stick with it through adversity. Followers trusted General Patton; Martin Luther King, Jr.; Gandhi; Jesus; and George Washington because they saw commitment. They saw sacrifice for the greater good. Commitment reveals and builds trust.

Kerry Rego is a Social Media & Technology Consultant and Keynote Speaker working with individuals, businesses, government and non-profits. Since 2006, she has been educating, implementing, and training staff on new media tools.

Kerry is the City of Santa Rosa Recreation & Parks Department social media instructor, the lead trainer for California Community College’s Interactive Internet and Mobile Applications for Business program (iima4biz), and a Vistage speaker.

Kerry is currently President of Leadership Santa Rosa Alumni Association, Rotary Club of Santa Rosa West Communications Co-Chair, sits on the City of Santa Rosa Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board, and volunteers as a guest speaker and mentor for Tomorrow’s Leaders Today.

Kerry was born and raised in Santa Rosa, CA with a background in office management, recruiting, and entertainment. She has two A.A.S. degrees, one in Software Applications and one in Computerized Business, was a double major, and salutorian of her class at Heald College of Business. She is the recipient of the North Bay Business Journal’s 2011 “Forty Under 40 Award.” She is married with a sassy 6 year old girl.

In Memory of DGN John Deir

In Memory of Rotarian John Deir, DGN 2013 – 2014 (Rotary District 5960)
Member of the Lake Elmo Rotary Club

It is with a heavy heart that Rotary District 5960 confirms the death of Rtn. John Deir of the Lake Elmo Rotary Club. John was slated to be the District Governor in 2013 – 2014.

John recently retired from a thirty-seven year career in education. The first twelve years were spent as a Social Studies teacher in Marshall, Minnesota. He then moved into the position of assistant principal at Marshall High School.

After a two year stop as the Marshall Middle School principal, he moved to Litchfield, Minnesota and assumed the principal’s position at Litchfield High School. In 1992, John moved to the Cities and became the principal at Fridley High School where he remained until he retired in 2003.

In 1986, he was invited to become a member of the Litchfield Rotary Club. He was elected president of that club in 1992 but resigned when he went to Fridley that year. He was Fridley-Columbia Heights Rotary Club president in the year of Rotary’s 100th celebration from 2004-2005.

Upon his first retirement, he became a realtor with Coldwell Banker Burnet in Fridley for two years. In 2005, he was asked to serve as the interim principal in Mahtomedi and remained in that position for four years, retiring again in 2009. During this time, John and his wife, Sandy Nicholson, moved to Stillwater and he joined the new Rotary club in Lake Elmo. He served as their president in 2008-2009. John has served as an Assistant Governor for Area 11 and as the Future Vision Pilot trainer.

John joined Rotary in 1986 because the high school principal was the designated Rotarian from the school administration. While a member, he discovered that Rotary embodied programs that reflected his value system. Helping those less fortunate. Working for peace. Providing opportunities for a better and healthier life. And the idea of service above self hit a nerve. Over time he had come to a full stride as a Rotarian and was eager to serve Rotary in a different capacity as governor of District 5960.

John lived in Stillwater with his wife Sandy. Both he and Sandy enjoyed traveling. John was an avid reader of non-fiction. As a history major, he enjoyed history and politics as well as dabbling in fiction and other fields from time to time. John and Sandy have two children. Tim lives in Texas and has two children. Anna Nicholson lives in the Twin Cities area.

Rotary District 5960 and all of its Rotary Clubs send our condolences to John’s wife, Sandy, and their kids. He was a great Rotarian and will be missed by all who knew him.

First, I want to congratulate Rotary on 107 years of being an amazing service organization make a huge difference in the world! Rotarians should be very proud of who they are and what they are a part of!

Also, it was recently announced that there were no New cases of Polio in India – due to the efforts of Rotary Internationals’ Polio Eradication campaign we have finally ceased the diseases growth in India.

Rotary began its efforts to fight polio in 1985 and by the time we’ve wipe polio out, we’ll have made contributions of nearly $1.2 Billion! More recently, Rotary began working with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations to help raise much needed funds to eradicate polio. Rotary recently announced that they succeeded in meeting the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s $200 Million match on January 17th!

Not only with money, but thousands of Rotarians have participated in National Immunization Days to immunize millions of children all around the world. They signature yellow vests and hats are a welcome site through out the world as people associate people associate the eradication of polio with Rotary.

Again, Rotarians have a lot to be proud of and excited about!

At 5 & 7 years old, these kids already know the importance of helping other kids in poverty. Starving kids around the world are dying in massive numbers and through the simple words of 2 kids and a mom, we try to explore the power of giving life with the gift of food.

In today’s featured segment, I sit down with Peter Vodenka. In June of 1983, Peter, his wife their 4 year-old daughter and two-year-old son defected from behind the Iron Curtain of Communist Czechoslovakia. In the middle of a cold, rainy night, they ran for our lives across the border from Communist Yugoslavia to western Austria while being chased by guards with automatic weapons.

They had spent ten years planning their escape. They could tell no-one, not even their families of their plan and they left them and everything we owned behind. This was the only way to protect them from the wrath of their government, which they knew would come if we were successful. If captured, Peter and his wife would have faced an automatic 10 year sentence in a hard-labor prison camp with the most dangerous criminals. Their children would have been taken and raised in government-run institutions.They would have been labeled as political criminals and would never have seen their children again.

How did Peter and his family escape?
What was it really like to live in a communist country?
How did they get to America?
Did they ever see their family again?
Was freedom really worth the risk?

They will arrive in Minneapolis/St. Paul on February 3 and depart on February 11th with a greater understanding of American culture and experiences.

Rotary clubs worldwide meet US$200 million fundraising challenge

Rotary International has succeeded in meeting the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s US$200 million match in funding for polio eradication, raising more than $202.6 million as of 17 January.

“We’ll celebrate this milestone, but it doesn’t mean that we’ll stop raising money or spreading the word about polio eradication,” Rotary Foundation Trustee John F. Germ told Rotary leaders at the International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA. “We can’t stop until our entire world is certified as polio-free.”

The fundraising milestone was reached in response to $355 million in challenge grants awarded to The Rotary Foundation by the Gates Foundation. All funds have been earmarked to support polio immunization activities in affected countries where the vaccine-preventable disease continues to paralyze children.

“In recognition of Rotary’s great work, and to inspire Rotarians in the future, the [Gates] foundation is committing an additional $50 million to extend our partnership,” said Jeff Raikes, chief executive officer of the Gates Foundation. “Rotary started the global fight against polio, and continues to set the tone for private fundraising, grassroots engagement, and maintaining polio at the top of the agenda with key policymakers.” Raikes also addressed Rotary leaders at the International Assembly.

The new $50 million grant from the Gates Foundation is not a challenge grant.

Since 1988, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99 percent, from about 350,000 cases annually to fewer than 650 cases reported so far for 2011. The wild poliovirus is now endemic in only four countries: Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan. However, India on 13 January marked a full calendar year without a case, paving the way for its removal from the endemic list.

But other countries also remain at risk for polio cases imported from the endemic countries. In Africa in 2011, Chad and the Democratic Republic of the Congo had significant outbreaks. Also in 2011, a small cluster of polio cases in China, which had been polio-free for a decade, was traced to Pakistan.

Rotary club members not only reached into their own pockets to support the Gates challenge, but also engaged their communities in a variety of creative fundraising projects, such as a fashion show in California that raised $52,000, benefit film screenings in New Zealand and Australia that netted $54,000, and a pledge-supported hike through Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, that brought in $38,000. Many events were planned around 24 October, widely observed as World Polio Day.

To date, Rotarians worldwide have contributed more than $1 billion toward the eradication of polio, a cause Rotary took on in 1985. In 1988, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention joined Rotary as spearheading partners of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. More recently, the Gates Foundation has become a major supporter. In 2007, the Gates Foundation gave Rotary a $100 million challenge grant for polio eradication, increasing it to $355 million in 2009. Rotary agreed to raise $200 million in matching funds by 30 June 2012.

Reaching children with the oral polio vaccine in the disease’s remaining strongholds is labor- and resource-intensive due to a host of challenges, including poor infrastructure, geographical isolation, armed conflict, and cultural misunderstanding about the eradication campaign.

This official St. Paul Winter Carnival Event is scheduled for Saturday, January 21, 2012, and will take place on the ice at Ramsey County Beach in White Bear Lake, from 11 am to 4 pm. I want to dedicate this show to the memory of fellow Rotarian Pat Struve – a long time member of the St. Croix Falls Rotary Club – who past away recently.

Patrick had a passion for Rotary and loved to serve others. He was particularly interested in the fight to eradicate Polio throughout the world through Rotary vaccinations and supporting a children’s hospital in the Country of Haiti after the tragic earth quake in 2010. You can hear about that project in Episode 8 of Rotary Club Radio, which was recorded after Pat told me about the incredible work happening there.

Patrick’s service would have received his 8th Paul Harris Fellow Award (Paul Harris Fellow +7) the week before he died. Although Patrick was unable to receive the award at the meeting, it was a celebration of his ‘Service Above Self” lifestyle, generosity, and spirit of Rotary in action.

Rotary Club Project Spotlight

The St. Croix Falls Rotary Club is working with the Salvation Army and individuals from the community and the St. Croix Falls School District to create a hunger relief backpack program and on Friday, October 28 the St. Croix Falls School District officially kick off the Program.

This program is designed to meet the needs of hungry children when other resources are not available. Backpacks are filled with food, and students bring them home on weekends to help feed their families.

There is no fee charged to be in the program. Currently, over 68 backpacks are filled on Thursday afternoons and sent home with children the following day. 68 backpacks help feed 273 people.

The program is dependent upon donations. Here is how it breaks down: $7.50 will help feed a family for a weekend, $90 will help feed a family for three months, and $270 will help feed a family for the school year.

The Rotary Club of St. Croix Falls is raising money to provide milk, a much needed item, to the program. By setting up special vouchers with local grocery stores, families can redeem the vouchers for milk anywhere they are accepted. Milk is an important part of a child’s diet and at almost $4 a gallon, the Rotary Club of St. Croix Falls is working hard to raise the funds necessary to help out.

I look forward to bringing you updates on this program to see how things are going. If you community is like most communities, 1 out of 6 children go home on the weekends worried about what they are going to eat. Perhaps your club would be interested in creating a backpack program in your community.

On September 22, 2011 at the Walker Art Center in Downtown Minneapolis, a documentary film will be previewed featuring the band Staff Benda Bilili. The band originates from the Democratic Republic of the Congo – and each band member has a unique story to tell about how Polio has effected them.

Rotary International has been a supporter of this event and film, which promotes so much of what Rotary is known for around the world and they want to encourage you to to attend and promote this important events that focus on Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio.

Staff Benda Bilili, is an up and coming group of rising music stars that will be touring our area. Most of the members of the group are survivors of Polio. This is a major opportunity to to get the word out in your community of the fact that Rotary is dedicated to the eradication of this deadly disease.

Significantly the group is from the Democratic Republic of the Congo where the disease had been eliminated but has now resurfaced in a major way.

This is a question that we all here from time to time, as we share with others more about the organization that we invest our time, talents, and money into each week. Would you know how you’d answer the question – “What is Rotary?”

District Fall Training

On September 17th, Rotarians in District 5960 will be given the opportunity to learn how to answer the question, “What is Rotary?” during the Fall Training that is taking place in Hudson Wisconsin.

The Fall Training is an interactive, informative and practical opportunity for Club Presidents, Presidents-Elect, Membership Chairs, Foundation Directors, Grants Subcommittee Chairs, Public Relations Chairs, as well as any Rotarian to learn how to excel at their current and future role in Rotary.

There will be speakers, presentations and break-out sessions focused on membership, public relations, scholarships, and other Foundation programs.

The day will also provide an introduction to the district’s “200 Videos in 200 Days” project. You can get a chance to be help plan, produce and possibly star in your very own video. This will be a hands-on, interactive day of learning and doing.

Rotary Club Radio Host Update

On August 19, 2011 at 5:11am – my wife, Shara, and I welcomed Sawyer Wayne into the world. Weighing in at 8lbs. 8oz., Sawyer joined his big brother Cade and sisters Ella and Addie. We’re very lucky to have a photographer in the family, who came to the hospital to take some newborn photos of our little guy.

I appreciate all the well wishes, prayers and support from the Rotary Club Radio community! Yes, mom and baby are doing great!

I interview Bill Breon with Students Today Leaders Forever, an independent non-profit organization. Bill is a member of the Twin Cities Rotaract. He is the Professional Development Chair for that club.

Students Today Leaders Forever started in 2003 by a group of University of Minnesota students with a desire to server others. It is currently in 13 states and has worked with over 3,300 students. Students Today Leaders Forever provides opportunities to server through Community Service Road Trips for young people.

Each Road Trip take 30-40 students to various locations to perform service activities and teach leadership skills and responsibilities. The trip length depends on the age group (see below).

Middle School – 3 day trip
High School – 5 day trip
College Age – 9 day trip

Students pay a portion of their own way, but the majority of the funds are raised through individual and corporate donors and grants. Students and staff will stay in the communities they server at facilities like churches, YMCA, Salvation Army, or Hotels. Services include, but are not limited to environmental clean up projects, visiting nursing homes, cleaning up youth/community centers, and habitat for Humanity projects.

Students Today Leaders Forever has partnered with Rotary Clubs in several states to bring students to help with Club Projects in local communities. This is a unique opportunities for Rotary Clubs like yours to connect with an organization willing to provide students willing to server in your community at no cost to the club. I highly recommend you take advantage of this opportunity.

Supporting Economic Growth in the Developing World

Cheetah Development is engaged in one of the poorest areas on earth, East Africa, primarily in Tanzania. While malnutrition rates hover around 40%, half of the food grown by farmers rots and is never consumed. This organization is filling the gap in an investment range essentially missing in the developing world, from $5,000 to $500,000.

This is the key investment size because it creates businesses that solve the problems that keep people hungry. And since the model is based on business, it is sustainable for the long-term. Moreover, it is highly efficient with money – creating a substantial impact for the amount invested – far beyond what is expected in traditional aid.

I believe Cheetah Development offers the kind of “sustainability” that Rotary Clubs around the world are exploring and trying to adopt.

As a very young organization, in operation since just 2 years ago, Cheetah Development has already made great progress in economic development in Tanzania. While the nonprofit organization is based in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, there is an investment company in Tanzania that allows investors to support the business development projects that Cheetah Development generates, along with the donor support of the nonprofit.

This organization is changing the way foreign aid is delivered and executed. While the donated goods and services provided by traditional foreign aid programs are a great short-term solutions, they are not sustainable and often times will stop any business development progress that has, or could be made in the communities they serve.

Join Rotary Club Radio at the District 5960 2011 Fall Training

Rotary Club Radio is pleased to be attending the Rotary District 5960 – 2011 Fall Training on September 17, 2011.

The event will be held at the YMCA Camp St. Croix, 532 County Rd F, Hudson, WI from 9:00 am – 2:45 pm. The training focus will be for Membership, Public Relations & The Rotary Foundation. (Registration is required by September 7)

The Fall Training is an interactive, informative and practical opportunity for Club Presidents, Presidents-Elect, Membership Chairs, Foundation Directors, Grants Subcommittee Chairs, and Public Relations Chairs to learn how to excel at their current role in Rotary.

There will be speakers, presentations and break-out sessions focused on membership, public relations, scholarships, and other Foundation programs.

The day will also provide an introduction to our “200 Videos in 200 Days” project. You can get a chance to be help plan, produce and possibly star in your very own video. This will be a hands-on, interactive day of learning and doing. To work on this part, bring along a video camera or a smart phone!

All District 5960 Rotarians welcome at no charge for registration and luncheon!

Announcement for Rotary Friendship Exchange to Turkey between Districts 5960 and 2430

Our District 5960′s ‘Rotary Friendship Exchange’ (RFE) Planning Team is excited to announce an Friendship Exchange opportunity with District 2430 in Turkey. We will be accepting applications for the Outbound Team starting Sept. 1st – deadline for applications is Oct. 31st, 2012.

Application and information regarding this exchange can be found on the District Friendship Exchange website.

Dates for the outbound and inbound trips are scheduled for:

Outbound Team - May 24th – June 3rd, 2012
Inbound Team – June 20th – June 30th , 2012

The Rotary Friendship Exchange committee is also looking for 3 clubs to host our Inbound guests when they arrive next June. Guests would stay for 3-4 days at each club location and there will be a team of 8 participants per team.

On our second segment on successful fundraisers, I want to focus on 2 ways to have a successful fundraiser right away. Rather than re-inventing the wheel, it may be better to follow these 2 suggestions and nearly guarantee a successful fundraiser!

Fundraising Rule #1
Partner with an existing event that will allow you to provide the entertainment, food, or a service at the event. An example of this is the St. Croix Falls Rotary Club, who is the main Beer vendor at the Wannigan Days Festival in St. Croix Falls.
Fundraising Rule #2
Get a big name to headline your event. This may cost you some money up-front, but if the Return on Investment is greater than the cost, you’ll make money. An example of this is the St. Croix Falls Rotary Club, who partnered with the Festival Theatre to provide Beer and Wine sales for a Comedy special with Louie Anderson.

A special note that Thursday, June 23, 2011 is the installation of District 5960’s next District Governor, Judy Freund in beautiful Historic Hudson, Wisconsin. The celebration will include an evening of culture and Service Above Self!

Judy is a life-long educator who is committed to supporting international education in the schools. She received her bachelor’s degree in Broad Area Social Studies from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and her Masters in Curriculum and Doctorate in Education Leadership from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul.

In addition, Judy has served as president of the Hudson Daybreak Club in 2002-2003, is the co-chair of the Social Concerns Committee at St. Patrick’s Church in Hudson, and is active in local community sustainability efforts. The opportunity to serve as District Governor extends the interest in involvements that highlight service and the opportunity to make a difference.

Rotary Club Radio looks forward to having Governor Judy on with very soon, but for now I’d like to say welcome and congratulations on your new position in Rotary District 5960.

Today on Rotary Club Radio, I want to talk about Fundraising. Rotary Clubs love to provide service and opportunity to serve, but many times the projects that would best serve the community are costly. Not just in time and effort, but many time in dollars. Rotary Club’s around the world have found unique ways to raise funds to bring in the necessary financial support to complete the humanitarian projects that are so important in thousands of cites all over the world.

So the question is, How Does Your Club Raise Money?

Today I want to focus on a few clubs within District 5960 and what they are doing to raise funds for their clubs and give you an opportunity to 1. participate in the efforts and 2. share your unique fundraising ideas with Rotary Club Radio.

Roseville Rotary Club – 4th Annual “Taste of Rose Fest”

Why:

As stated on their website: “This event is the backbone of our funding for all the good work Roseville Rotary does in this community and throughout the world,” said Roseville Rotary President Loren Anderson.

An example of some of the projects they’ve funded…

Ready! Set! Read! – an award-winning early childhood literacy program; Bridging; Roseville Area Senior Program; Rotary Woods in Central Park; STRIVE – a mentoring and scholarship program for high school seniors; Polio Plus – Rotary’s worldwide effort to eradicate polio; Kids Voting; Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts; NW Youth & Family Services; school, hospital and water projects in Mexico, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Haiti; Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly; and many more.

This event is schedule for Thursday evening, June 30, 2011, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

There will be 27 food tasting and wine stations from approximately 20 area businesses will be located at the Central Park Arboretum and Rotary Woods at the Dale Street park entrance between County Roads C and B2.

It is a unique opportunity for discriminating diners to sample and compare some of the finest food dishes and wines local area restaurants have to offer.

St. Croix Falls, Hudson Day Break, and St. Croix Rotaract Club Car Raffle

The 2011 Rotary Raffle, which features a 2011 Ford Mustang or $15,000 in cash as the Grand Prize and a Fox 50 Scooter as the 2nd prize, is a collaborative effort between 3 clubs. The car and scooter are transported to different events around the area – county fairs, parades, festivals, carnivals, etc. and tickets are sold up until a the drawing which will be held at the Wings and Wheels Festival on September 11, 2011 at 4pm at Mill Pond Park in Oseola, WI

Sometimes it can be tough collaborating with multiple clubs, but if your club can do it, there are great opportunities for successful fundraising.

Now both the Roseville Rotary Club and the St. Croix Falls/Hudson Daybreak Rotary Club took the time to explain why they are raising funds and how to get involved.

On April 27, 2011, around 200 tornado’s blew across the southern portion of the United States. These storms raged across 6 states killing over 300 people.

Tuscaloosa, AL, home of 2 Rotary Clubs, had about 1/7 of their city destroyed by the EF5 tornado that ripped a 6 mile path of destruction through its streets. The tornado is estimated to be have been up to 1 mile wide at times and had sustained winds of over 200 mph.

Note: According to The Chronicle:

About 350 people have been confirmed dead across the country as a result of tornado activity last week.

Authorities are still sifting through the rubble after an 80 mile (129km) long, 1.5 mile (2.4km) tornado tore through Tuscaloosa — the worst hit location.

About 5000 structures have been damaged and 13,000 people affected in a city with a population of 98,000.

With only about 24 minutes notice, the population of Tuscaloosa had little time to prepare for the tornado and once it was over, they were left with over 5,000 structures (homes, businesses, and buildings) destroyed, 41 deaths, with 60 people still missing.

According to today’s guest, the Tuscaloosa Red Cross and Salvation Army Headquarters were destroyed as well as the Boys and Girls club.

On April 27, 2011, over 160 tornado’s blew across the southern portion of the United States. These storms raged across 6 states killing 290 people.

Alabama – 204 fatalities
Mississippi – 33 fatalities
Tennessee – 33 fatalities
Georgia – 14 fatalities
Virgina – 5 fatalities
Kentucky – 1 fatality

Alabama was the hardest hit with 204 fatalities, the tornado that ripped through Tuscaloosa – Home of the the University of Alabama – was thought to be over 1 mile wide and over 200 mph. Early estimates are that it was an EF5 tornado.

According to news sources, people were given about 24 minutes notice to prepare for the tornado’s, but the combination of the size of the twisters and the magnitude of power behind them, most structures were completely destroyed; nothing was left.

Rotary Club Radio has reached out to both of the Rotary Club of Tuscaloosa, in hopes of hearing more about the recovery efforts and how our community might support them.

Update from Laura Kriessin on 4/22/11

All the students and staff at my high school, Tokiwagi Gakuen, are safe. As far as shortages, etc., things are getting better. Sendai Airport has also started having domestic flights again.

Unfortunately, last week, my first host mother, father and younger sister went to my host mother’s home town to attend the funeral of her niece and niece’s husband, who are still considered missing.

Listen to Laura describe the events as she experienced them back on March 11th and follower her through the emotional roller-coaster that eventually led her back to Cannon Falls, MN, leaving behind her friends and host families she had grown to love over the past 8 months in Japan.
Not knowing if classmates had survived, she continues to try to contact her host family in efforts to hear actual news about the tragedy.
How did her parents, Ken and Heidi Kressin, cope with the news and what eventually brought Laura home?

For today’s Rotary Club Minute, I want to turn our eyes, ears, and hearts to Rotarian’s in the country of Japan and their entire population; as well as Shelter Box International, who responded quickly to the awful situation. As I’m sure you’ve heard, an earthquake measuring 8.9 shook the island of Japan on March 11, 2011. This event on its own would have been bad enough, but the earthquake triggered a massive tsunami that devastated the coastal cities.

Reports, videos, and pictures from Japan show cars, boats, and building complete destroyed and carried away with waves 10 meters high. To put this into perspective, the earthquake was reportedly 8,000 times stronger than the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand last month.

Shelter Box sent a (SRT) ShelterBox Response Team of three members to deliver the emergency disaster relief boxes to the people of Japan. Currently, tens of thousands remain missing and feared dead and nearing a 1/2 million are left homeless, either because of the earthquake, tsunami, or evacuations resulting from the nuclear power plants damaged in the quake’s aftermath.

On March 15th, the first shipments of ShelterBoxes have finally arrived. With emergency shelters completely overrun by the displaced, the SRT team will face the challenges of distributing the supplies in frigid temperatures, regular snowfall, a lack of food and water, and hundreds of thousands of desperate people seeking your help.

Quake rekindles community spirit, drives change: Rotary

Have you been following the news of the Earth Quake in New Zealand? The devastating quake has been challenging to deal with, but Rotary Clubs and Rotarians have stepped up to the challenge and raised a 1/4 of a Million Dollars through their charity fund.

Rotarians, who have so far raised $260,000 through their charity fund, have heaped praise at the way people have responded to help each other and the people of Canterbury after the devastating earthquake that hit Christchurch on February 22.
All the money raised would be channelled into helping the recovery and rebuilding of the region, a special two-day conference in Auckland at the weekend attended by 350 Rotarians was told.

“The spirit of families, their neighbours and communities looking after and helping each other is a cornerstone of the international service club’s existence,” Stuart Heal, a Rotarian from Cromwell who is now a Rotary International Director, told the conference.
“I think the earthquake has reinforced that people living in this country are, mostly, by nature caring and giving and will support a cause,” Mr Heal said.

It was a pleasure to interview Craig Leiser today. Craig is the 2010-2011 District Governor of Rotary 5960 which covers areas in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. Craig has a lot of experience in Rotary starting with serving as Club President in his home club, the Stillwater (SunRise) Rotary Club. I interviewed Camille Hardman from Barking Cat Productions and Ron Hunt from the Tully Rotary Club in Northern Queensland Australia. Ron, a 38 year Rotary Veteran, joined me on Rotary Club Radio to talk about this unique project that the Tully Rotary Club did to save their small town from financial disaster. Camille, a film producer, was able to record the story to share with the world.

Tully is a small town known for its heavy rains and successful sugar cane market. However, when Brazil dumped its sugar stockpile on the global market, Tully’s economy sank to the brink of a financial crisis.

At a town meeting called to brainstorm how to save the town, one man proposed something completely crazy ~ to build the worlds Biggest Gumboot in honor of Tully’s record rainfall of 7.98 meters back in 1950.

In a wild turn of events that brought everything together in this funny documentary, we get an inside view of a Rotary Clubs ambitious goals to save their town, a lot of laughs, and a whole lot more.

Each student is known for their extraordinary success in school and was recognized by the Rotary Club as a leader. At the end of the meeting, 2 students received a $100 scholarship from the St. Croix Falls Rotary Club.

Rushton joined the Rotary Club of San Antonio Down in 1994 and later joined the Rotary e-club after when circumstances made it difficult to continue to a regularly scheduled Rotary Club meeting.

In this episode, I’m interviewing Greg Hill, the Public Relations/Media Relations Chair of the Rotary Club of Topeka, KS. Vocationally, Greg is the Assistant Executive Director of the Kansas Dental Association and he uses technology everyday to tell others about what new for dentists ~ so why not do the same to tell others about Rotary?

I ran across Greg on Twitter when I saw a post inviting others to watch his Rotary Club live on the internet. Using the power of “Free Technology,” Greg is getting the message of Rotary out to others and making a difference for Rotary.

Here is a video clip of Greg talking about what Dentist are doing in Kansas to provide free dental care to people who can’t afford to go to the dentist themselves.

Greg shares with me how he uses social media tools like: Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and Ustream to educate others about Rotary Club. He talks about the digital newsletter that he helps produce for the Topeka Rotary Club, that eliminated thousands of dollars in printing and mailing costs each year.

The newsletter is online and easy to read like a paper version, but with this new technology he is able to add multi-media effects like audio and video to enhance the reader’s experience.

Dramatic Rescue in Haiti – 7 Days After the Quake

Fading hope was restored as NYPD and FDNY rescued more earthquake victims, 7 days after the quake struck. Beating the odds, a brother and sister were rescue after their father flagged down a Haitian police office who sent for the New York City Rescue Team. That father was feeding his children through a tube and communicating with them until help arrived.

Watch the child expressions of joy as he is pulled from the wreckage, it is truly heart warming.

Haiti will face years of difficult recovery and with the death toll surpassing 150,000 people and climbing, the shattered government is trying to bury the dead and provide for the survivors. With the help of some world governments and countless organizations like Rotary and Shelter Box, Haiti has received much needed relief and supplies, but because of the chaotic scene, many still haven’t received assistance.

As more help arrives and supplies like medicine, food and clean water are delivered, the short term mission to save lives will turn into a long term mission to sustain and rebuild a nation.

Millions are now homeless and unable to contemplate the steps necessary to begin such a rebuilding task. They will need shelter, food, water, and support to begin the process. If you would like to help, you can donate money to provide a shelter box that will help give shelter and needed supplies to an extended family of 10 people.

There are many wonderful relief agencies working in Haiti right now and support from individuals and businesses are necessary for humanitarian efforts to continue.

You probably have heard by now that the Island of Haiti was struck with a massive 7.0 Earthquake a continues to be rattled hourly by aftershocks that are as violent as a 5.0 earthquake. The people of Haiti have been dealt an incredible blow to their community and Rotary has stepped up efforts with Shelter Box to provide over 700 shelter boxes with more to come. A 3 person SRT team is already on the ground and is organizing the immediate distribution of the Shelter Boxes. I had an opportunity to interview a SRT Member ~ David Eby ~ at the District Conference last April and he is currently on deployed in Haiti.

We know that the first 48 – 72 hours of an earthquake crisis are very important to the survival of the event. As I write this, we are approaching 68 hours and rescue will begin to turn into recovery efforts. Current estimates of death are between 50,000 – 100,000, but disease and violence will take more in the coming days and weeks. Sanitary conditions are terrible and clean water isn’t widely available ~ except via relief efforts.

The recovery for this region is expected to take years and already there are hundreds of thousands left homeless and afraid to even go back to their homes for fear that another earthquake will strike.

Reports from Haiti say thousands of people have been sleeping in the open air for the second night running, with some people even being forced to sleep among dead bodies.

With such a pressing need for emergency shelter provision, ShelterBox is dispatching 700 ShelterBoxes with even more to be packed before the end of the week. ShelterBox is using all of the resources available to make sure immediate aid reaches Haiti. Boxes are being shipped direct from ShelterBox HQ, from prepositioned stock in Curacao and from El Salvador.

A three-person ShelterBox Response Team comprised of highly-experienced members David Eby (US), Wayne Robinson (US) and Mark Pearson (UK) are doing all they can to make it to Haiti as quickly as possible. Alongside this,the dedicated team of volunteers at ShelterBox HQ in the UK are giving up their time to help pack the ShelterBoxes ready for transportation.

ShelterBox Founder Tom Henderson said: ‘Our team around the world are doing all they can to ensure aid reaches the people of Haiti as soon as possible. With each day the need grows and we’re doing all we can to get help to the thousands of families affected by this tragedy.

‘The response from our volunteers and supporters has once again been sensational. We can’t do this without the public’s compassion and generosity. If you can help us, even in the smallest way, then please do.
